Glaumbær

Fodor's choice

North of Varmahlíð on Route 75, Glaumbær is an excellent example of traditional Icelandic turf farms and features a church and several buildings, some of which date back to the 18th century. Among its fascinating artifacts is a beautifully crafted willow-root basket said to have been made by the legendary outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur. Adding to its historical significance is the fact that Glaumbær is an ancient farmstead (existing long before the buildings we see today) and was once home to Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir, the first European white woman to travel to America.

Fosslaug

Close to the Reykjafoss waterfall, this heated natural pool is a popular destination for travelers in the area, so you might have to share it with strangers, especially if you're visiting in the summer. Go after midnight or at the crack of dawn if you want to enjoy it on your own. A short trail off Route 752 leads to this hidden gem.

Reykjafoss

A short trail off Route 752 leads to this enchanting little waterfall, one of the lesser-photographed spots in Iceland. It is not only lovely to look at, but it also provides a relaxing natural soundtrack to those taking a dip in the nearby Fosslaug natural pool.
