Ice Trekking

Hielo y Aventura. For the most unusual and up-close-and-personal experience with Perito Moreno glacier, book yourself onto an ice trekking day where you'll don crampons and walk over the glacier studying crevasses and ice lakes before finishing with a whiskey on the rocks using ice from the glacier. The Mini Trekking excursion is a 10-hour trip and includes a 90-minute ice trek, a short trek in the forest, a 20-minute boat ride, and a transfer to the park from your hotel. You'll have to pay your own park entrance, bring a packed lunch, and wear the right clothing (crampons are provided), but you also get over an hour to enjoy the view of Perito Moreno Glacier from the park. For a more in-depth and challenging ice day, Hielo y Aventura also offers the Big Ice trek, which includes more time on the ice and ducking through bright-blue ice tunnels. This excursion has around seven hours’ walking in total and is a longer day (ages 18–50 only). During high season, tours can get a bit crowded, but with a glacier the size of Buenos Aires, there is plenty of white space to feel true isolation. Ice trekking is available May to mid-September. Av. Libertador 935, El Calafate, Santa Cruz, 9405. 2902/492–205; www.hieloyaventura.com. From US$100.
