Fodor's Expert Review Citizen M

218 W. 50th St., New York, New York 10019, USA See on Map

A stylish property with a refreshing attitude in Midtown Manhattan, this hotel is all about giving you everything you need and nothing you don’t. To make guests feel at home, the lobby is designed to feel like a living room and is full of books and magazines. There's also an all-season rooftop bar that has 360-degree views.

Unlike other hotels that stash a fitness center in the basement, the gym here is on the 20th floor and also has great views.

Streamlined rooms have gigantic windows, free movies, and free Wi-Fi (and skip extras you don’t need like trouser presses). Beds take up most of the room in the tight quarters, but a small work desk and wall-mounted flat-screen TV are squeezed in.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Rooms more closely resemble compact pods than full hotel rooms—even by New York standards, space is tight.

Frosted glass separates the rain shower and toilet from the rest of the room.

The bright lobby is designed to feel like a living room, with lots of comfy couches, softly glowing lamps and a variety of books and magazines.

CanteenM is a quick and casual spot for coffee, snacks, sandwiches, and drinks. Conveniently, it’s open 24 hours a day.

Cloudbar is the hotel’s rooftop bar with big couches, a fun cocktail list, and--most importantly--unbelievable views.

Getting Around

Located on West 50th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue, this hotel is set in a prime spot for exploring the landmarks of Midtown Manhattan, including the theater district, on foot. Central Park is within walking distance. Subway access is available nearby with the C and E trains at 50th Street plus the 1 train at 50th Street and the N, R, and W trains at 49th Street. Taxis and Uber are widely available in the neighborhood, but traffic congestion is a common problem.

An outpost of the East Village ramen destination in midtown, Ippudo Westside (4-minute walk) serves its signature Tonkotsu pork broth and thin noodles in a modern space. Vegetables are the star at The Little Beet (3-minute walk), including dishes like maple roasted acorn squash and broccoli with sesame chile dressing. Wine nerds looking for a hearty meal alongside interesting wines should check out Aldo Sohm Wine Bar (4-minute walk); try the charcuterie tower.

Some of the best cocktails in Midtown are shaken and stirred at The Rum House (5-minute walk). For sake and beer in a lively environment, check out Sake Bar Hagi (3-minute walk).

Rooms deliver the essentials but a lack of space encourages visitors to mingle in the generous common areas. We love the rooftop bar with its big couches and the living room-inspired lobby stocked with books and magazines. When choosing a hotel in Midtown, views matter, and both the rooftop bar and the gym offer gorgeous ones.
