Why We Like It
Few accommodations between Santa Fe and Taos capture the region's Spanish Colonial charm and offers such peace and relaxation as this rambling adobe compound. The innkeeper's warm hospitality is a big plus, and breakfasts are fabulous. It's also nice to relax by the outdoor gas-fire ring with a refreshment after a long day of exploring, gazing up at the stars.

The thoughtful staff at this nine-room, pet-welcoming B&B in one of the prettiest and most historic villages on the High Road to Taos go above and beyond to make guests feel completely at home. At this tranquil property with sweeping views of the Sangre de Cristos you're never far from nature, even if simply relaxing on the portal admiring the abundance of colorful hummingbirds. Rooms are colorfully furnished and rates include a hot gourmet breakfast, and you'll find lots to do in the area, from exploring the galleries in town to hiking at Bandelier National Monument to museum-hopping in Santa Fe.

Room
Each of the rooms at this homey inn are individually appointed with colorful Southwestern blankets and textiles, many with private entrances, grand views of the landscape, and kiva fireplaces. Even the cozier units have plenty of room to relax and spread out, and most have covered porches or decks.
Bathroom
While not overly luxurious, the bathrooms at Casita Escondida have plenty of charm, from colorful Southwest tilework to soft towels. The Wildflower Room stands out for its romantic clawfoot tub.
Lobby
Guests can relax in the warmly appointed living room–lobby, which have fireplaces and are stocked with books, board games and other diversions. But on warm days, the idyllic grounds are the loveliest common space on the property to hang out.
Dining
Although there's not a restaurant on the property, a delicious hot breakfast—which could feature anything from lemon-blueberry pancakes to green-chile soufflé—is served each morning.
Drinking
Casa Escondida doesn't have a bar, but both the indoor and outdoor common spaces, and the rooms, provide plenty of inviting spaces to sip a glass of wine, and you'll find several excellent wineries in the vicinity plus an excellent wine shop, Kokoman.

Getting Around
The inn is located in a rural community about 35 minutes' drive north of Santa Fe and 20 minutes' drive east of Española, and there are no public transit options, so a car is needed to get here and explore the area.
Restaurants
Delicious red-chile tamales, carne adovada platters, and trout amandine are among the traditional Northern New Mexican specialties served at Rancho de Chimayó (5-minute drive), a gracious Spanish Colonial compound shaded by cottonwood trees. Along the picturesque High Road to Taos, Sugar Nymphs Bistro (30-minute drive) is a wonderful stop for eclectic seasonal fare, including ratatouille with red quinoa salad, lamb stew, and lavish desserts.
Bars
Historic El Paragua (20-minute) restaurant and saloon doles out exceptional margaritas and serves great Mexican fare, too. Head to the contemporary Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder (25-minute drive) resort to gamble in the casino or enjoy cocktails or a bite to eat at several bars and restaurants on-site.
