5 Best Shopping in Freeport, The Mid-Coast Region

Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers

Fodor's choice

The creations of this nationally recognized, local furniture company are displayed in a beautifully restored 19th-century home about a block from Bean's. The two-floor showroom is filled with artful, finely crafted wood pieces that have clean, classic lines. If you'd like to see how the furniture is made, ask about tours given on Wednesday and Friday at the large workshop 30 minutes away in Auburn (by appointment only).

Bridgham & Cook, Ltd.

If you're an Anglophile or a Brit missing Merrie Old England, this is the shop for you. Among the many shelves of imported goods are proper teapots, lots of English teas, Branston pickle and other condiments, Lyle's golden syrup, biscuits, sweets, and preserves. You'll also find tartan scarves, knitted sweaters, tweed caps, single-malt glasses, pint glasses, jewelry, and calendars.

R. D. Allen Freeport Jewelers

This shop specializes in jewelry featuring brightly colored tourmaline and other gemstones mined in Maine. Most of the pieces are the work of Maine designers. Watermelon tourmaline—part pink, part green—is a specialty.

Wicked Whoopies

Sweeten your visit to Freeport with a taste of Maine’s official state treat: the whoopie pie, consisting of two small cake rounds with a creamy filling. The selection here includes the classic chocolate cake with vanilla filling as well as some 20 enticing variations, including banana cream, mint, red velvet, and peanut butter. These discs of deliciousness come individually packaged, making them great for gifts as well as on-the-go snacks.

Wilbur's of Maine

Calling all chocoholics! In a big, pumpkin-color house and barn at the lower end of Main Street, you'll find a wonderland of tempting treats, including chocolate-covered blueberries, turtles, almond butter crunch, truffles, fudge, and many more old-fashioned confections. They're all made by a dozen chocolatiers working in the adjacent barn; ask about taking a factory tour. Wilbur's has a second shop downtown on Bow Street.
