A winding, 6-mile strip of kitsch, commerce, funk, and fashion, Magazine Street is a shopper’s mecca, a browser’s paradise, and a perch for prime people-watching. It meanders from Uptown through the Garden District to downtown. Young professionals, college students, and hipsters flock to the area’s funky vintage shops, cafés, boutiques, restaurants, and casual bars. Clothing stores here run from on-trend casual wear to vintage and consignment goods to high-end designer apparel. The street houses mostly locally owned stores, but there are also a few chains like American Apparel, Design Within Reach, and Free People. Antiques and home furnishing shops also are scattered throughout.
City buses provide transportation to and along Magazine Street, and streetcars travel St. Charles Avenue, which is a short walk away. Walking the 6-mile length of Magazine is possible, but some blocks have more stores than others, and you’re better off making a plan and deciding your focus beforehand. If you're looking for a clothing-driven shopping experience, for example, try the blocks farther west, between Nashville and Jefferson avenues, where there are a number of stores carrying designer labels. Between Jackson Avenue and Felicity Street, to the east, you'll find a stretch of shops selling eco-friendly attire and accessories, menswear, and home decor. The blocks between Louisiana and Washington avenues are filled with popular restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Detailed maps are available from the Magazine Street Merchants Association.
