Fodor's Expert Review Inn on Randolph

411 Randolph St., Napa, California 94559, USA See on Map

A few calm blocks from downtown Napa action, the Inn on Randolph is a sophisticated haven celebrated for its gluten-free breakfasts and snacks. On a nearly 1-acre lot with landscaped gardens, the Gothic Revival–style main house contains the living room, gourmet kitchen, and five rooms. Out back are five historic cottages.

Well-placed splashes of color jazz up the earth tones of the plush furnishings that grace the rooms and cottages. Seven rooms have a gas fireplace; in the main house's Hannah Moore room, named for a member of the family that owned the property for nearly a century, dark tile surrounding the fireplace spans floor to ceiling without a mantel, a striking effect.

In the back of the property and ultraquiet, the cottages, some with a private garden, are made for romance.

In keeping with the rest of the inn, the bathrooms, all with heated floors, are contemporary, stylish, and spick-and-span. All the cottages and two rooms in the main house have spa tubs.

The Fowler cottage has a large two-person spa tub and a walk-in shower with dual shower heads.

To the right of the foyer, the living room, painted a rich gray and trimmed in white, has a gas fireplace that glows softly on cool nights.

Be sure to check out the book in the living room detailing the property's evolution into the inn of today.

Frittatas, sticky buns, eggs Benedict, house-made granola, waffles, pancakes, scones, and soufflés are typical of the two-course gluten-free breakfasts that make a stay at the Inn on Randolph so special. Snacks are available throughout the day, including chef Dianne King's marvelous chocolate chip cookies, but there is no restaurant here.

There's no bar here.

Getting Around

The inn occupies a corner lot less than a half-mile southwest of downtown Main Street, an easy walk away. You'll need a car to visit wineries beyond downtown, though. VINE public buses stop nearby.

Among the dozen nearby restaurants worth checking out, try Miminashi (8-minute walk) for izakaya Japanese bar-style cuisine (plus excellent soft ice-cream), Angèle (8-minute walk) for classic French, and Morimoto Napa (9-minute walk) for the famed Iron Chef participant's wildly inventive Japanese. A little farther away at Torc (15-minute walk) chef Sean O'Toole serves intricate Modern American dishes in a revitalized 19th-century stone structure.

Silo's (8-minute walk) has a full bar and presents live music, some of it local. Cadet Wine + Beer (10-minute walk) draws a youngish crowd that appreciates the high-quality wines and beers and all-vinyl soundtrack. Mercantile Social (11-minute walk), the Andaz Napa hotel's bar, specializes in craft spirits, some from California.

A sophisticated color palette and spotless housekeeping heighten the visual appeal of this inn whose design seamlessly blends its Victorian and contemporary influences. Although the hospitality is old-school attentive, the decor is not. You won't spot antique lace or doilies, but you will find retro-courant furnishings from Restoration Hardware and similar purveyors. The breakfasts are nothing short of sublime.
