The only overland route to Nova Scotia crosses the Isthmus of Chignecto: a narrow neck of land that joins the province to New Brunswick. The Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 2 in New Brunswick) becomes Highway 104 in Amherst, the first town after the border. From there you can make it to Halifax, connecting to Highway 102 at Truro, in two hours. If you're headed to Cape Breton via New Glasgow and have time to spare, you can opt for a scenic drive along Route 6, which runs along the coast of Northumberland Strait.
