Car Travel

Unless you are taking a day trip outside the city, driving in Tegucigalpa is best avoided. In Barrio El Centro, parking is an ordeal and traffic snarls are frequent. Directional signage is sparse, and thanks to the city's hills, the orderly grid of streets fizzles out once you leave downtown. Many intersections have no stop signs or stoplights. Avoid the hassle and use taxis for getting around town.

Car Rental

The vehicle of choice for exploring Honduras—especially if you are heading off the beaten path—is the four-wheel-drive double-cabin pickup. Rental cars are not cheap, however. A number of international companies, including Alamo, Avis, Hertz, and Thrifty, are based at the airport. Advance is a well-regarded Honduran firm. Their prices start at L950, or about $50 per day for the most basic four-door sedans.
