Playa Grande

Unless you are a strong swimmer attached to a surfboard, don't go in any deeper than your waist here. There is calmer water for snorkeling about a 30-minute walk north of Las Tortugas, at a black-sand beach called Playa Carbón. All Playa Grande and Tamarindo hotels can arrange guided boat tours of the estuary for around $25 per person. You may see crocodiles, monkeys, herons, kingfishers, and an array of other birdlife; go either early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and bring insect repellent.
