2 Best Restaurants in Uglich, Russia

When you’ve had your fill of local cuisine and are in the mood for something a bit more familiar, Uglich’s ever-popular Italian eatery is a safe bet. The eclectic interiors look a bit thrown together, with wrought-iron chairs with curlicue motifs, off-yellow walls that give way to a couple of windows that don't let in much light, and funky (and completely out-of-place) purple backlit ceiling designs. The Italian cuisine on offer is of the heartier variety, and many of the dishes come drenched in heavy cream sauces or generously topped with grated cheese. However, they do have salads and lighter options too.

Russkaya Usadba

This is one of Uglich’s most affordable spots to try out a wide array of classic Russian dishes without breaking the bank. Although you can take your meal in the cavern-like underground bar section—complete with gray stone walls—the main part of the restaurant is a bit more elegant, in an old-fashioned kind of way, and has large windows draped with gossamer curtains and polished marble floors. Traditional Russian dishes come beautifully presented and include favorites such as kulebyaka (salmon and rice pie), baked fish, and stroganoff. There's also an extensive dessert list, with everything from chocolate cake to the innovative (and not-to-be-missed) strawberry gazpacho with ginger ice cream.
