The Vlatades Monastery, shaded with pine and cypress, is a cruciform structure that displays a mixture of architectural additions, from Byzantine times to the present. It's known for its Ecumenical Foundation for Patriarchal Studies, the only one in the world. The small central church to the right of the apse has a tiny chapel dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul, which is seldom open. It is believed to have been built on the spot where Paul first preached to the Thessalonians, in AD 49.
