When to Go

Whenever it's gray and cloudy in Paris, chances are the sun is shining in Burgundy. Situated in the heart of France, Burgundy has warm, dry summers. May here is especially lovely, as are September and October, when the sun is still warm on the shimmering golden trees, and the grapes, now ready for harvesting, scent the air with anticipation. This is when the vines are colorful and the caves (cellars) are open for business. Many festivals also take place around this time. The climate in early spring and late fall isn't quite as idyllic, with a mixture of sun and scattered showers. The winter months vary from year to year, and although snow is not common, freezing temperatures mean the bare vines and trees are covered with a soft white hue. Layers of clothing are always advisable, so you're ready for cooler mornings and hotter afternoons. Waterproof outer layers are wise on longer day trips if the weather forecast is changeable.
