Beneath its well-restored medieval charm, Helsingør is a working-class town with a substantial population of immigrants. Although you won't find the fancy boutiques that dot the rest of northern Zealand on Helsingør's pedestrian shopping streets—Stengade, Sternegade, and Bjergegade—there's a great selection of traditional food providers that will offer memorable snacks. From April to November an outdoor market with fresh fruit, cheese, and fish takes place on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at Axletorv, in the center of town.
