Visiting the Taj Mahal

Hours: The Taj is open Saturday to Thursday, from sunrise to sunset. It’s closed on Friday. The Taj Mahal museum is open Saturday to Thursday 10 am to 5 pm.

Admission: Rs. 750

Best time to visit: Many people say that sunrise or sunset is the best time to see the Taj Mahal, for the glorious colors. Though the Taj Mahal is glorious any time of day, midday is probably the worst time to visit because of the bright sun reflecting off the white marble (bring your sunglasses). By all means, go early to beat the heat, but don’t count on having the place to yourself, as there are almost always crowds at the Taj Mahal.

Night Viewing: The Taj is open for viewing 5 nights per month, on the full moon and two nights before and after, except Friday and during Ramadan. Limited numbers of tickets are sold one day in advance (your hotel might be able to arrange tickets for you), for a half-hour visit between 8:30 pm and 12:30 am. Admission price is the same as during regular hours. It’s a romantic way to see the Taj but definitely not a substitute for a day-time visit. Taj Ganj, Taj Rd. www.tajmahal.gov.in/
