Fodor's Expert Review Palm Tree Heritage

Odayam Beach, Varkala, Kerala, India

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This eco friendly property on a tantalizing strip of the isolated Odayam Beach is run in a partnership by a Swedish and Indian couple. While the staff is friendly and hospitalable, service isn't great. It is an affordable escape to a tranquil almost private beach destination yet not too far – a kilometer or more – from the hustle and bustle of Varkala's public beaches with its variety of cafes. Rooms are large and clean with busy many colored Indian accented furniture and too brightly painted bathrooms. There are three hotels in one here. Adjacent is Palm Tree Bungalows that has well-priced cottages aimed at honeymooners. And a five minute walk away in the adjoing cover is the Palm Tree Annexe, a three-strorey building with pleasant, clean rooms. Check all three properties before choosing a room.

PROS

  • affordable, yoga
  • non a/c cottages cheaper still

CONS

  • Decor a bit heavy on the eye
  • property is small and not too stylish
