If you're coming up from Thiruvananthapuram, central Kerala starts here, with the peaceful waters of the eight-armed Ashtamudi Lake. The waterfront here is not nearly as developed as Vembanad Lake, and the few resorts are utterly peaceful and reasonably priced. Quilon itself is bustling and fairly nondescript, and most travelers pass through fairly quickly.
