A great spot for tourists looking for an edgier Hong Kong hotel at which to base themselves. With Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Happy Valley right on the doorstep, Butterfly on Morrison is a boutique property with plenty of appeal in a great location.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The smallest rooms feel cramped when occupied by a couple with luggage, plus those on lower floors have no views to speak of.
Basic Superior rooms start small but should you need more space then larger rooms—some with views of Happy Valley Racecourse—are available at a higher premium. Décor is modern but the designers haven’t overdone it on the style front, with pops of color and geometric patterns enough to stand the rooms at Butterfly on Morrison out from plainer, more grown-up HK options.
Unremarkable bathrooms come with walk-in showers and while not big, there are certainly smaller to be found in the city.
Toiletries are re-stocked daily so feel free to fill your wash bag.
Balancing the look of a slick, contemporary boutique hotel with just a hint of hostel decor, the lobby at Butterfly on Morrison offers a bright, informal arrival to the property. Shockingly for Hong Kong, the entrance doors are at street level so locating the hotel is simple.
The hotel’s restaurants serves up authentic Cantonese dishes but guests will find a neighborhood teaming with food options should they want to explore.
If you can stand the humidity, walk the neighborhood where you’ll find the likes of Happy Valley racetrack and Times Square close by—along with the boutiques of Causeway Bay. If not, taxis are plentiful or Wan Chai MTR is relatively close.
Leave the hotel and the Cantonese cuisine behind and head for Samsen (11-minute walk) and dine on Thai noodles. For classic Chinese food (not to be mistaken with Cantonese) check out Modern China (11-minute walk) on one of the upper floors of the Times Square mall.
Enjoy a glass of fine wine at Le Bistro Winebeast (16-minute walk) or head to the speakeasy Back Bar (16-minute walk). Located on a back alley through an easy-to-miss side door, the bar is a buzzy place for cocktails.
WHY WE LIKE IT
You can accuse Butterfly on Morrison of scrimping on amenities but for travellers who deem the likes of spas, pools and rooftop cocktail bars unnecessary, the hotel has everything you need—stylish rooms in a great location at a reasonable price point.
