Safety and Precautions

Although Montevideo doesn't have the problems with crime that larger cities in South America do, it's best to watch your wallet in crowded markets and to avoid walking down deserted streets at night. Most of Montevideo's residents stay up late, so the streets are usually full of people until 1 am. The city bus authority discourages boarding empty buses at night. Look for the helpful tourist police decked out in blue berets and yellow vests that say policía turística. They patrol Avenida 18 de Julio, the Ciudad Vieja, and the Mercado del Puerto.
