Getting Oriented

Uruguay is one of South America's smallest countries, both in area (it's roughly the size of England) and population. Montevideo anchors the coast, and most of the population and action hugs the water line. Vast ranches and farms fill the hilly, sparsely developed interior. Uruguay’s elite beach destination Punta del Este attracts beachgoers from across South America and beyond while historic Colonia del Sacramento offers a quiet getaway for many Buenos Aires residents who take a quick ferry ride across the Río de la Plata. Ferries also reach Montevideo from Buenos Aires in a couple hours, making Uruguay a favorite and easy trip from Argentina’s capital.

  • Montevideo. True to developing-country patterns, all roads, literal and figurative, lead to Montevideo. Uruguay's friendly capital strings for miles along the southern coast with an odd positioning that means you can walk south, north, or west from the center city to reach the water.
  • Colonia del Sacramento. It's hard not to fall in love with Colonia. The picturesque town has a six-by-six-block old city with wonderfully preserved architecture, rough cobblestone streets, and a sleepy grace. Tranquility reigns here—bicycles and golf carts outnumber cars.
  • Punta del Este. One of the world's trendiest beach communities, Punta del Este is a glitzy destination that doesn't sleep in peak season. Every summer, families and the celebrity jet-set flock to its shore for sun, good food, and luxury.
