Fodor's Expert Review Second Home Peru

Domeyer 366, Barranco, Lima, 04, Peru See on Map

Hidden on a dead-end street a few blocks from Barranco's historic center, this B&B-cum-art-gallery in a refurbished, early-20th-century house is surrounded by tropical gardens, sculptures, and a sweeping Pacific view. The former home of eminent Peruvian artist Victor Delfin, it is run by his daughter, Lilian, who doubles as the concierge. Abundant artwork compliments the architectural details and inspiring views to make this one of Lima's loveliest lodging options.

Each room is unique, though all of them have high ceilings, pine floors, original art and sculpted iron bed heads. Those on the second floor of the house have either ocean or garden views, whereas new "mirador" rooms, perched on the cliff below, have small balconies and jaw-dropping ocean views.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Rooms in the house are very quiet, but the ocean view of the 'Mirador' rooms comes with a soundtrack of the waves and traffic below.

The varied bathrooms range from spacious to cramped, but they all have bathtubs and high ceilings.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The two rooms with 'shared terrace' have tub and toilet in the room, behind a low wall.

The house's ground floor has a small reception area and three airy halls with tile floors, plentiful polished pine and big windows that afford views of the back lawn and the Pacific Ocean. The main hall is flanked by a spacious breakfast room, the walls of which are covered with giant paintings by Victor Delfin, and another bright room that holds a collection of pre-Columbian ceramics.

When the weather is nice, the back terrace and lawn are idyllic places to hang out.

Nestled at the edge of a ravine below the house is an eye-catching, tiled pool with a jaguar-head fountain at one end.

A sumptuous breakfast is served with an ocean view on the ground floor.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Though this hotel lacks a restaurant, there are several good ones within blocks.

Getting Around

You can reach any of Barranco's attractions on foot or bicycle, which can be rented on the Malecón Souza, a few blocks from the hotel. However, you'll want to take a taxi or Metropolitano rapid bus to Lima's other neighborhoods. The hotel can arrange a trustworthy taxi.

Barranco's popular Isolina Taberna Peruana (3-minute walk) is known for its massive servings of traditional Peruvian dishes (mostly meat) and casual tavern atmosphere. A great place for a seafood lunch is Amor Amar (5-minute taxi ride) where delectable dishes are served in the shade of poinciana trees. Cala (10-minute taxi ride), perched behind a rocky beach below Barranco, offers inventive versions of popular seafood and meat dishes with a front-row ocean view. Antica Pizzeria (4-minute walk) serves an array of thin-crust pizzas and other Italian fare at reasonable prices.

DaDA (8-minute walk) is one of Barranco's trendier nightspots, with a bar and restaurant in a restored belle-époch mansion and an outdoor bar in the garden. A potpourri of antiques and religious statues fills the Posada del Angel (4-minute walk) where solo acts perform Latin American pop and trova music most nights. Ayahuasca (4-minute walk) is a popular bar in a refurbished historic mansion. For a quiet drink with an ocean view, head down the narrow path behind the Iglesia de la Ermita to the Mirador and El Acantillado de Barranco (6-minute walk). La Candelaria (10-minute walk) offers peña shows on weekend nights that are a great way to experience Peru's colorful folk dances.

Second Home Peru is a feast for the eyes and a relaxing oasis in a relatively loud and chaotic city. It is an authentic B&B with a no-nonsense proprietor, Lilian Delfin, who is there most mornings helping her guests plan their travels or resolve problems. It is within walking distance of the parks, museums, boutiques, restaurants, and nightlife that make Barranco Lima's most fun neighborhood.
