Cable Car to “Lost” Peruvian City Opens

Visitors hoping to visit the remains of Kuelap, the formerly “lost” city located 10,000 feet up in the Andes, have faced either an hour and a half drive or a grueling 5.5-mile uphill hike. Now, the 6th-century fortress will be accessible to the 35,000-some tourists that visit every year after a simple cable car ride. The 2.5 mile-long cable car, equipped with 26 gondolas, takes visitors from the town of Nuevo Tingo to the ancient site in just 20 minutes.

Kuelap, who’s founding predates that other famed Peruvian ruin by almost 1,000 years, was lost in the remote mists of the Andean cloud forest for three hundred years before it was rediscovered in 1843.
