Language

Paraguay is South America's only officially bilingual country. About half the population speaks the indigenous Guaraní as its first language. If you know some Spanish, don't hesitate to use it. In Asunción the staff at more expensive hotels and restaurants are likely to speak some English. The typical person on the street likely knows none. Outside Asunción it's unusual to find anyone who speaks anything but Spanish or Guaraní.
