Fodor's Expert Review Kapawi Ecolodge & Reserve

Achuar Territory, Pastaza, Ecuador

This group of typical Achuar huts—no nails were used in construction—is equipped with modern amenities like electric lights and private baths. All-inclusive packages last four to eight days, but you must stay a minimum of four days and three nights, for a cost of $600. An extra day and night will cost you an extra $120. This is an excellent experience if you want to see wildlife and have some contact with the Achuar people. According to an agreement, the ecolodge will be transferred to the Achuar in 2011. For birders, Kapawi has a booklet mapping out trails and bird species nesting in the area. In 10 days it isn't unusual to see almost 400. All meals are included. Remember that round-trip airfare from Quito will cost you about $225.
