Car Travel

Driving in Colombia is safer than ever and can open up the magical world of small-town Colombia, but stick to routes between main tourist centers and avoid travel at night. Steer clear of north–south routes to the Caribbean coast and nighttime travel around Popayán and Cali. Keep your car doors locked and windows rolled up at all times.

Also, beware the crumbling, narrow, and winding roads that during rainy season can turn to mud or wash out completely. Always bring a good map, as signs are irregularly posted. Tolls (up to 7,000 pesos) are common. Consider hiring a car and driver or using a taxi for excursions.
