Hiking

Although there are very real security issues in Colombia, hiking clubs have thrived in Bogotá over the last decade. Do not attempt to hike anywhere on your own—go only on a guided hike. In the region of Boyacá, in which Bogotá is located, there are many safe hikes following caminos reales, stone-paved paths often dating from colonial times.

Caminar Colombia. Convening every Sunday and often on Saturday, Caminar Colombia promotes and leads hikes of various levels of difficulty through the countryside and highlands about Bogotá. Sal Si Puedes. Sal Si Puedes is the venerable dean of Bogotá's hiking clubs. Established in 1979, it offers day hikes every weekend, with longer two- and three-day excursions at least once a month.
