Planning Your Time

After crossing the Golfo de Ancud on the morning ferry on your first day, drive south to Ancud. Soak up the port town's atmosphere, but do try to visit the colony of penguins at nearby Puñihuil. Head to Dalcahue the next day, and have lunch at the colorful artisans’ market. Then, take the short ferry ride to Isla Quinchao and visit the colorful church of Santa María de Loreto. Back on Isla Grande, proceed to Castro. Spend the next day relaxing, shopping, or visiting the capital's museums and the lovely church, then head south to tour Chonchi, known to locals as the "City of Three Stories." From there it's just a one-hour drive to the Pacific coast to visit the Parque Nacional Chiloé, where you can enjoy a hike through the forest and go horseback riding on the beach. If you have another day or two, consider going to Parque Tantauco near Chiloé's southernmost town, Quellón.
