Vale dos Vinhedos

The Serra Gaúcha—the mountainous region of Rio Grande do Sul—produces 90% of Brazilian wine. Grapevines grow throughout the hilly terrain, but the heart of the wine-making country is within the municipality of Bento Gonçalves, settled by Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. Because the best-known Brazilian wineries are within a few miles in this region, the name Vale dos Vinhedos (Vineyard Valley) has become synonymous with quality wines.
