Visiting outlying areas in the Amazon usually results in unforgettable adventures, but tropical environments can be hostile and communications are poor, so prepare well and go with a companion if possible. It's a good idea to stay in a recommended lodge, hire a guide, or go with a tour company specializing in backcountry adventures. To join a tour or to choose a destination, contact one of the tour companies we suggest, or consult with a state-run tour agency.

Before departure make sure someone knows exactly where you are going and when you are returning. Tell them you will contact them as soon as you have a phone or Internet access. Research important health and safety precautions before your trip, and take a basic first-aid kit with you. The more remote your destination, the more seriously you should heed the travel advice and health precautions in this book. Your adventure can be wonderful, but you have to prepare well.
