Angra dos Reis

Angra dos Reis (Bay of Kings) has it all: colonial architecture, beautiful beaches, and clear green waters. Schooners, yachts, and fishing skiffs drift among the bay's 365 islands, one for each day of the year. Indeed, Angra dos Reis's popularity lies in its strategic location near the islands. Some are deserted stretches of sand, others patches of Atlantic rain forest surrounded by emerald waters perfect for swimming or snorkeling.

Despite it's spectacular location, the town of Angra itself is nothing special and contains none of the historical importance of nearby Paraty. Its best used as a jumping off point to explore the surrounding islands and Ilha Grande, and you should plan to pick up supplies and take out money. If you don't have time (or the inclination) to head across to Ilha Grande, opt for a pousada or hotel outside of the main center for the best experience.
