Planning Your Time

Rio has more than its fair share of stellar attractions—both natural and man-made—and good planning is key to fitting it all in. It is possible to visit the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon in one day on foot. From Leblon it's just a short stroll down to Lagoa, home to the city's vast lake set against the mountains.

Set aside another full day to see the historic heart of the city in Lapa, Santa Teresa, Glória, and Catete. All are within close walking distance of each other, but the steep hills up to Santa Teresa can be a challenge in the heat, so grab a taxi or bus instead. Key attractions such as the Christ statue and Sugarloaf Mountain can be visited as part of a full-day or half-day city tour, which will make whistle-stop visits to other key locations in the city, too.
