Air Travel

All international and domestic flights to La Paz arrive at El Alto airport, which is on the altiplano in the city of El Alto, 12 km (7 miles) from downtown. Many stop first at Santa Cruz’s airport, Viru Viru, which also serves as an international hub. American Airlines has daily flights between Miami, Santa Cruz, and La Paz. Amaszonas has a very useful flight from La Paz to Uyuni and along with another new private and very reliable airline, Ecojet, covers nearly every internal destination. The state-owned airline BoA is slightly cheaper and serves most destinations as well, but the planes are a bit older and delays are more frequent. TAM, the military airline, can offer very good value but is unreliable and should be avoided if possible.

Domestic flights can be heavily booked, so always reconfirm your reservation a day or so in advance. If you do not, your reservation may be canceled.
