Along the water in D.C.' s modern and pristine Navy Yard is the brand-new Thompson Hotel from Hyatt. The industrial-chic, nautical property allows you to settle in for a while and explore its many amenities, including a gorgeous rooftop bar (Anchovy Social) with a wraparound balcony, an upscale seafood eatery by Danny Meyer (Maialino Mare), and a spacious lobby with a bar that makes for a perfect meeting point. Still getting their sea legs, this contemporary, design-forward addition to the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood is just a mile from area attractions like the Capitol Building, with plenty of dining options and museums nearby. Regardless of which Smithsonians you visit during the day, though, head to Anchovy Social at sunset for views of the Anacostia River on one side, and Nationals Park baseball stadium on the other. Staff members are invested in making your experience outstanding. They'll go out their way to make you feel welcome, which might be perceived as too friendly to some.

Room

Hardwood floors are found throughout the 225 rooms at the Thompson, along with clean lines, contemporary artwork, and navy, brass, and dark wood furnishings. Nautical touches are subtle and tasteful. Headboards have built-in reading lamps, and there are small desks by the window for any last-minute business. The King Corner rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the ballpark, but there are also king rooms with river views; the option to have a walk-out balcony; and ADA-accessible rooms. The sunny Thomspon suite is perfect for a just-married couple or anyone looking to luxuriate, with a private balcony, separate guest bathroom, and bar. The junior suite has a king bed, bar, and sofa.

Bathroom

Thoughtful touches bring added comfort to guest bathrooms, like motion-sensor lights under the sink to help you find your way in the middle of the night. Showers have fog-free shaving mirrors, and the toilets and showers are separated by the sink area for added privacy. Even small details like shampoo caps that have been designed to not roll away add a little something extra to your experience.

Lobby

The reception area is off to the side of the entrance, making for a private check-in. The rest of the lobby is sun-drenched with a bar in the middle that's open late, a table with outlets for getting work done, cozy chairs to wait for your party or hold a business meeting, and a separate section with tables and chairs for working or mingling. The well-lit, high-ceilinged open-concept lobby is extraordinarily inviting, outfitted with the same decor found throughout the hotel.

Gym

On the lower level of the hotel is a small fitness center with several cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, and yoga mats.

Dining

Renowned restaurateur Danny Meyer is behind Maialino Mare, the upscale Roman-style trattoria getting just as much buzz as the hotel itself. A seamless transition from hotel to the restaurant, Maialino Mare is on the first floor of the Thompson and shares many of its traits: concerned and attentive staff, Navy Yard-inspired touches, and vast, open space. With a heavy emphasis on seafood pasta dishes, and entrees like whole-roasted fish, Maialino Mare sources ingredients from local farms and fisheries. The dessert menu should not be overlooked: the tiramisu is a must-try. In spring and summer, guests can dine outside on the patio until 10 pm, and there is a private dining room for up to 24 people and a private wine room for up 14 people.

The restaurant serves at all hours: the coffee bar opens at 6:30 am during the week and at 7:30 on weekends, and they serve breakfast all week long, weekend brunch, weekday lunch, daily Cicchetti and aperitivo, and nightly dinner until 10 pm (10:30 pm on weekends).

We anticipate the restaurant improving even more once the property becomes further established and they get into the swing of things. Note that the bar and restaurant have a no-tipping policy, and hospitality is included in your service.

Drinking

One of the coolest components of the Thompson is Anchovy Social on the top floor, which is open to both guests and nonguests. Colorful, chic, and contemporary, Anchovy Social has a more relaxed feel than its sister restaurant downstairs but is a perfect place to host an event like a wedding rehearsal dinner or after-party. It's also just a great place to get a drink, especially during happy hour when the sun is setting, and you have 360-degree views of the riverfront and the Nationals baseball stadium. Order small on-theme plates like the smoked trout tin or sharable appetizers like Maryland crab deviled eggs, shrimp cocktail, and tuna stuffed peppers. They also have a reasonably-priced seafood tower to satisfy larger parties, as well as pizza (with anchovy as an available topping, of course). In addition to finely-crafted seasonal cocktails, (try the Town Beach with bourbon, black tea, honey, and amaro), they serve beer and wine. Note that the bar and restaurant have a no-tipping policy, and hospitality is included in your service.

Thompson guests received free access to the area's Capital Bikeshare program. There are many properties within walking distance, and rideshare companies like Lyft operate regularly in the area.

Restaurants

Get front-row seats to the Anacostia River at the small-batch District Winery, (5-minute walk), a tasteful, cavernous winery and restaurant. Bluejacket (2-minute walk) serves twenty homemade beers, plus American pub fare. Ice Cream Jubilee (2-minute walk) is the perfect stop for dessert with unique cocktail-flavored cones.
