Train Travel

Amtrak trains run out of Baltimore, Maryland, north toward Boston and south toward Washington, D.C., along the busy "northeast corridor." A rail station at Baltimore-Washington International Airport serves both Baltimore (about 15 mi to the north) and Washington, D.C. (about 30 mi to the south). Some trains running between New York and Chicago stop at Charlottesville, Virginia, and at two locations in western Virginia. Trains run between Newport News, Virginia, and New York City, stopping in northern Virginia, Richmond, and Williamsburg in between. Stops in Richmond and northern Virginia are also made on runs between New York City and Florida.

The Maryland Transit Administration operates commuter trains (on weekdays only) between Baltimore's Penn Station and D.C.'s Union Station. It also operates trains from Baltimore's downtown Camden Station and from Union Station in Washington, D.C. There's free bus transportation between the Baltimore-Washington International Airport Rail Station and the airport passenger terminal.

Virginia Railway Express, or VRE, provides workday commuter service between Union Station in Washington and Fredericksburg and Manassas, with additional stops near hotels in Crystal City, Alexandria, and elsewhere.
