Staunton

Staunton (pronounced stan-ton) was once the seat of government of the vast Augusta County, which formed in 1738 and encompassed present-day West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and the Pittsburgh area. After the state's General Assembly fled here from the British in 1781, Staunton was briefly the state's capital. Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), the nation's 27th president and the eighth president from Virginia, was a native son, and Staunton is home to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum.
