Ski Areas

Mount Snow. The closest major ski area to all of the Northeast's big cities, Mt. Snow prides itself on its hundreds of snowmaking fan guns—more than any other resort in North America. There are four major downhill areas. The main mountain comprises mostly intermediate runs, while the north face has the majority of expert runs. The south face, Sunbrook, has wide, sunny trails. It connects to Carinthia, which is dedicated to terrain parks and glade skiing. In summer, the 600-acre resort has an 18-hole golf course, 11.3 miles of lift-serviced mountain-bike trails, and an extensive network of hiking trails. In 2018, the resort debuted a brand-new, $22 million, 42,000-square-foot Carinthia Base Lodge, five times the size of the previous lodge. Facilities: 86 trails; 600 acres; 1,700-foot vertical drop; 20 lifts. 39 Mt. Snow Rd., West Dover, Vermont, 05356. 802/464–3333; 802/464–2151; 800/245–7669; www.mountsnow.com. Lift ticket: $110.

Timber Creek. North of Mt. Snow, this appealingly small cross-country skiing and snowshoeing center has 4½ miles of groomed loops. You can rent equipment and take lessons here. 13 Tanglewood Rd., at Rte. 100, West Dover, Vermont, 05356. 802/464–0999; www.timbercreekxc.com. $20.
