Hazen's Notch Association. Delightfully remote at any time of the year, this center has 40 miles of marked and groomed trails and rents equipment and snowshoes. 1423 Hazen’s Notch Rd., Montgomery, Vermont, 05471. 802/326–4799; www.hazensnotch.org. Trail pass: $12.

Jay Peak. Sticking up out of the flat farmland, Jay Peak averages 349 inches of snow per year—more than any other Vermont ski area—and it's renowned for its glade skiing and powder. There are two interconnected mountains, the highest reaching nearly 4,000 feet. The smaller mountain has straight-fall-line, expert terrain that eases mid-mountain into an intermediate pitch. Beginners should stay near the bottom on trails off the Metro quad lift. There are also five terrain parks, snowshoeing, telemark skiing, and a state-of-the art ice arena for hockey, figure skating, and curling. The Pump House, an indoor water park with pools and slides, is open year-round. Facilities: 78 trails; 385 acres; 2,153-foot vertical drop; 9 lifts. 830 Jay Peak Rd., Jay, Vermont, 05859. 802/988–2611; www.jaypeakresort.com. Lift ticket: $84.
