Bus and Rail

Salt Lake has a very workable public transportation system, although it's used more by locals than visitors. One feature that even tourists rely heavily on is the Free Fare Zone for travel by bus within a roughly 36-square-block area downtown and on Capitol Hill. The TRAX light-rail system moves passengers quickly around the city and to the suburbs south of Salt Lake. There are 50 stations, originating from Salt Lake Central Station, where you can connect to FrontRunner (inter-county light rail), Amtrak, and buses. The Blue Line runs north–south from downtown to the suburb of Draper, serving the downtown landmarks and Rio Tinto Stadium (home of Real Salt Lake soccer) in Sandy. The Red line extends eastward to the University of Utah and southwest to the suburb of South Jordan. The Green line originates at the airport and loops into downtown before heading west to the suburb of West Valley. More than 20 stations have free park-and-ride lots. One-way tickets cost $2.50 and can be purchased from platform vending machines, online, or using the UTA mobile app called Transit.
