Boating and Fishing

Flaming Gorge Reservoir provides ample opportunities for boating and water sports of all kinds. Most boating facilities close from October through mid-March.

Old-timers maintain that Flaming Gorge provides the best lake fishing in the state, yielding rainbow and lake trout, smallmouth bass, and Kokanee salmon. The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam has been identified as one of the best trout fisheries in the world. Rainbow and brown trout are plentiful and big, but only artificial lures and fly-fishing are permitted; bait fishing isn't allowed. Fed by cold water from the bottom of the lake, this stretch is a calm, scenic stretch of water, ideal for risk-averse folk or for families who want to take smaller children on rafting trips but don't want to worry about them falling into white water.
