The Best and Loveliest Boutique Hotels in Austin
What has made Austin popular for so many years is its small-town feel. And even though the city is no longer small, it still features an array of boutique hotels and shops. Below is a list of some of our favorite small-time operations.
Inn at Pearl Street
Why it made the list
This quaint 100+ year-old mansion turned bed and breakfast is located within walking distance to The University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Capitol. We like this urban retreat for its Victorian touches, like clawfoot tubs and high ceilings, and patios ensconced in Live Oakes. And guests can add on fancy features like in-room massages, homemade breakfast or champagne.
Hotel Ella
Why it made the list
Once a private mansion is now a gorgeous boutique near The University of Texas at Austin. With its relaxing wrap around porch, inviting lap pool and luxurious bedrooms, this is a great choice for those who need to stay central but can treat themselves to a stylish yet antiquated retreat. The grounds feature the popular Goodall’s Kitchen, which serves upscale American fare, and the Ella Parlor Bar, a dusky cocktail room with Victorian décor. The rooms are big, bright and breezy, and make you feel like you’re visiting the Austin of the 1800s.
Heywood Hotel
Why it made the list
This seven-room boutique offers a quaint and relaxing night stay in the heart of the culturally and historically rich neighborhood of East Austin. The décor is a mishmash of Southwest and Scandinavian, and locally made art adorn the walls. Its central location, welcoming staff and luxurious bed and bathrooms make it well worth a stay.
Kimber Modern
Why it made the list
Located close to Lambert’s three hotels, but not owned by the hotel maven, is this micro bed and breakfast. Built with much love and investment, this space-age looking retreat is a study in sustainable architecture and design. Windows and concrete are the main aesthetics from the curb, and though the inside style is minimal, the place is functional and comfortable. We particularly like the relaxing courtyard with water fountain and canopy from regional Live Oaks.
Austin Motel
Why it made the list
This long-standing retro motel is a recent addition to Lambert’s portfolio. Known for its iconic sign and location on South Congress, Lambert and team turned the place up a notch and added candy-color décor and comfy bedding. The hotel comes with a kidney-shaped pool that offers a nice reprieve during the hot summer months of Austin. Of the three Lambert hotels in Austin, this one is your best deal with some nights running as low as $99.
Hotel San José
Why it made the list
Lambert’s first foray into the hotel business was this former rundown motel turned breathtaking boutique on South Congress Avenue. Like her other properties, Lambert knows how to mix mid-century modern and Western décor well. The property looks like it would fit in 1930s Los Angeles, but amenities are essentially Austin. Guests can enjoy a cocktail in the lush courtyard, or take a dip in the natural-looking pool. Rooms are minimal, but that doesn’t mean they’re lacking. Each include high-end bedding and toiletries.
Hotel St. Cecilia
Why it made the list
We’ll start with our first favorite hotel owned by local hotelier Liz Lambert, the queen of boutique accommodations. What was once a Victorian-era homestead is now an ultra-hip stay, with Mexico-inspired colors and décor, guitars and records to borrow, and a dreamy pool backlit by a neon sign that says “SOUL.” Located right off of bustling South Congress Avenue, this place is a great stay for those who want to be in the thick of it, but also who enjoy a charming escape.
