Fodor's Expert Review Ace Hotel

1022 S.W. Harvey Milk St., Portland, Oregon, 97205, USA

The quintessential Portland hipster lodging, this flagship location of the buzzy Ace Hotels brand contains a Stumptown Coffee café as well as the very good Clyde Common restaurant and Pépé Le Moko bar, is a block from Powell's Books and the Pearl District, and is right in the heart of Downtown's ever-trendy West End neighborhood. The minimalist-chic rooms are outfitted with comfortable, futon-style mattresses, locally made furniture, flat-screen TVs, and original wall murals—some have vintage accessories like turntables and vintage vinyl collections; others have iPod docks. Some rooms have private bath/showers, the less expensive rooms share. The cool common areas have large comfy couches and well-stocked bookshelves.

  • prime West End location
  • unique design and artwork in each room
  • free city bicycles available for guests

CONS

  • offbeat decor and hipster vibe isn't for everybody
  • the cheapest rooms don't have private baths
  • on a sometimes noisy street
