Fodor's Expert Review Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge
Ocracoke Island
Body Of Water/Waterfall
Hyde County's Lake Mattamuskeet is the largest natural lake in North Carolina. Fed only by rainwater and runoff, the lake is 3 feet below sea level. Once drained for farmland, the reclaimed 40,000-acre lake is the centerpiece of a 50,000-acre wildlife refuge that echoes with the calls of some 800 bird and wildlife species including beautiful tundra swans who call the lake their winter home.
