North Carolina Basketball Rivalries

North Carolinians are famously split when it comes to the sport of basketball. Most locals will tell you that this long tradition of great collegiate basketball is ultimately the product of a larger state commitment to education. North Carolina stands out in the South and indeed the nation as a center for medicine, research, and education. Today "Tobacco Road" runs through a lengthy section of one of the largest medical, pharmaceutical, and tech regions in the nation. For basketball fans, Tobacco Road is all about the rivalry between the Duke Blue Devils and the Tar Heels of UNC-Chapel Hill. While this rivalry is legendary, North Carolina also boasts several other championship schools, such as Wake Forest University, North Carolina State University, and Davidson College, who have helped keep the tradition of great basketball strong for half a century.
