Eastwind Hotel & Bar

5088 Route 23, Windham, New York 12496, USA

Why We Like It

With every detail hand-selected, the Eastwind embodies lagom (the Scandinavian concept meaning "just the right amount), and eclectic mountain lodge-chic. With family-style dinners, multiple fireplaces, and plenty of natural light, the hotel provides an ultra-cozy respite just two hours outside of New York City. It's also dog-friendly, so you'll have everything you could ask for during your weekend getaway.

Fodor's Expert Review

This former hunting and fishing lodge turned boutique property in the town of Windham, New York, provides dreamy escapes from busy city life. Settle into this Hudson Valley hideaway and sleep under the stars in an A-frame Lushna Cabin or an equally chic guestroom. Stark views of the Catskill mountains are visible from inside the main property, which acts simultaneously as a cozy lodge, lobby, cocktail bar, and restaurant. Scenic is every season, the Eastwind has a handcrafted feel, with various creature comforts and curated accents hidden throughout the property.

Room

Choose from a variety of lodging options, including heated Lushna cabins (there are three on-site), or from one of the 16 guest rooms available. Cabins are ideal for individuals or couples, with little room outside of the queen-size bed. You'll find all of the same amenities as in the guest rooms: Zenology bath products, Faribault wool blankets, and Frette linens. What you sacrifice in space you make up for in stunning mountain views when you wake up.

Guest rooms in the Hill House come with either one king or two queen beds. You won't find a television here, but you will find a bluetooth speaker from Otis & Eleanor, Turkish rugs, and other thoughtfully curated touches that make for a clean and cozy room. The Hill House also has an ADA-accessible room.

The main house or Bunk House invokes the same Scandinavian style as the rest of the property, with sparse but carefully-chosen details and subtle pops of color. The suite has a private fireplace, and the Writer Studio comes with a typewriter and is exposed to lots of natural light.

Bathroom

Each cabin has its own heated, full private bathroom located outside the cabin. Aquamarine tile and Zenology bath products make sure that you still experience Eastwind charm if you stay in the cabins. The suite bathroom comes with a farmhouse basin sink and a walk-in, waterfall shower. Oval mirrors in all bathrooms, plus picture windows complete the Art Deco ski-lodge feel.

Lobby

The Eastwind lobby located in the property's main Bunk House includes the reception area, plus a salon, cocktail bar, and communal-style dining. Play a game of chess or read a book by the furnace (they even have a Hudson Valley-themed lending library if you forgot your own tome). Floor to ceiling windows look out onto the mountains to really drive home that retreat feel; it's hard to be in a dour mood in this chic little lodge.

Spa

It may look small, but the on-site sauna can fit four-six guests to warm up after a day on the slopes.

Dining

Family-style dinners are served in the salon for guests on Saturday nights, upon request (7:30 pm only). Think something hearty and locally-sourced, accompanied by cocktails or wine of your choosing. A buffet breakfast is served on the weekends form 8:30 to 11, with options like fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola, cheese, charcuterie, and more.

Drinking

There's an intimate and charming bar in the lobby of the Eastwind; the bar itself is wooden, with enough space for six barstools (though there is plenty of seating in the lounge area of the lobby). Open Friday through Sunday from 5 to 10 pm, guests can enjoy finely crafted cocktails, plus beer and wine.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

You'll need a car to navigate your way around the Catskills and the Hudson Valley.

Restaurants

Gaskins Restaurant (45-minute drive) serves upscale comfort food made with local ingredients in a trendy/rustic setting. Bear & Fox Provisions (20-minute drive) in Tannersville, NY, serves some of the best housemade vegan chili and sandwiches; it's the ideal lunch stop before exploring the Hudson Valley.

Bars

As the Catskills are so sprawling, your best bet is getting some wine for your room, and of course taking full advantage of the on-site bar. There are a few drinking spots in Windham, however, including Ze Windham Wine Bar (2-minute drive) open Mondays and Thursday through Saturday.
