Buffalo handles most flights to western New York, with nonstop flights to 18 cities on 10 airlines.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about 15 miles east of downtown, off Interstate 90. 4200 Genesee St., Cheektowaga, New York, 14225. 716/630–6000; www.buffaloairport.com.

Buffalo Airport Taxi Service. The Buffalo Airport taxi service is the only official taxi service at the airport; it runs 24 hours to most destinations in western New York. Fares from the airport to downtown are metered, but run about $32. 716/633–8294; 800/551–4369; www.buffaloairporttaxi.com.

You could fly into Toronto (100 miles north of Buffalo) if you plan to see some of Canada.

Chautauqua County Jamestown Airport. Jamestown has a small airport, Chautauqua County Jamestown Airport with flights to/from Cleveland, Ohio. 3163 Airport Dr., Jamestown, New York. 716/484–0204.

Erie International Airport. Some towns in the Chautauqua–Allegany region are closer to the airport in Erie, Pennsylvania, Erie International Airport, than to Buffalo's airport. 4411 W. 12th St., Erie, Pennsylvania. 814/833–4258; www.erieairport.org.

Toronto has two airports.

Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Most flights arrive at Lester B. Pearson International Airport, 32 km (20 miles) northwest of downtown. 3111 Convair Dr., Mississauga, Ontario, L5P 1B2. 416/776–3000; www.gtaa.com.

Taxis to downtown Toronto from Pearson cost C$45 or more; rates are fixed based on destination. (Check fixed-rate maps at  www.gtaa.com.)

Toronto Airport Express. Toronto Airport Express offers 24-hour coach service daily to several major downtown hotels and the Toronto Coach Terminal (Bay and Dundas streets). It costs C$18.50 one way, C$29.95 round-trip. 905/564–3232; www.torontoairportexpress.com.

Toronto's City Centre Airport. Toronto's City Centre Airport, in the Toronto Islands, is a five-minute ferry ride from downtown. Ferry terminal at Bathurst St. and the lakefront, Toronto, Ontario, M5J 1B7. 416/863–��2000; www.torontoport.com/Airport.asp.

Porter Airlines. It is served by Porter Airlines, which has flights from a handful of cities in Canada and from Newark.
