Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, and South Slope

A small-town feel pervades Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, and South Slope, three neighborhoods west and southwest of Prospect Park, where locally owned shops, a quietly flourishing restaurant-and-bar scene, and verdant Green-Wood Cemetery are among the attractions. The cemetery, with its tree-framed, hillside views of Manhattan, and memorials to three centuries of New York City movers and shakers, provides both a respite and a history lesson. This corner of Brooklyn has a mellow pace and easy access to Prospect Park, which has made all three neighborhoods a magnet for young professionals, artists, and families. Windsor Terrace, particularly along Prospect Park Southwest, benefits from the allure of tranquil, tree-lined streets fronted by brick and limestone row houses. The same families have owned many of these homes for multiple generations. Unlike other Brooklyn neighborhoods that have experienced dramatic demographic shifts, Windsor Terrace has retained many of the Irish firefighters, police officers, and working-class residents who have long anchored the community, while welcoming new generations; Greenwood Heights and South Slope have struck a similar balance between new and old. Prospect Park West is the main drag in Windsor Terrace; in Greenwood Heights and South Slope, it's 5th Avenue and 7th Avenue (as in Park Slope to the north).
