The Marlton

5 W. 8th St., New York, New York 10011, USA

Why We Like It

Complimentary breakfast is a rare amenity in New York City and it's offered here in a beautiful solarium, almost hidden in the back of the hotel’s ground floor. The bones of the building have character, but the renovation gave it style and charm. We especially love the fireplace in the lobby.

Fodor's Expert Review

Built in 1900 and once home to Jack Kerouac, this Greenwich Village hotel has been renovated into a stylish boutique property with a residential feel. There’s plenty of room to spread out in the cozy lobby, complete with an espresso bar, and Margaux’s sunny solarium is one of Manhattan’s prettiest hotel restaurant spaces.

Room

Lacking extras like work desks, rooms are tight on space but are elegant with luxurious throw blankets, intricate crown molding, and herringbone wood floors.

Tip Rooms suit a variety of budgets, from the tiny, petite full room to the gorgeous penthouse suite complete with a private rooftop terrace. There's a price point for (mostly) everyone at this hotel.

Bathroom

Small but attractive marble bathrooms have stall showers and bathrobes (some rooms have tubs).

Lobby

With a coffee bar, tufted couches, and shelves lined with books, the comfortable lobby attracts guests as well as locals looking for a quiet place to work.

Dining

A small espresso bar is located in the lobby, which flows into a cocktail bar with a few booths and counter seating. Beyond the bar, a restaurant called Margaux has a sunny solarium and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is extremely lovely, and absolutely worth a visit while you're there.

You Should Know Annoyingly, this property does not offer room service.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

This hotel’s location is particularly convenient, both for exploring the charming streets of Greenwich Village and the West Village on foot, and for connecting with other areas of the city via subway. The A, C, E, B, D, F, and M trains are all available a short stroll away at the West 4th Street station.

Restaurants

With décor inspired by an Italian train station, Otto (1-minute walk) is a cozy pizzeria and wine bar; we recommend sitting at the bar and chatting with the bartender about wines by the glass. For a quick bite, Burger Joint (1-minute walk) offers quality renditions of burgers, fries, and milkshakes. A taste of Spain is found at Tertulia (5-minute walk), where diners can share tapas like croquetas and larger, family-style dishes like paella.

Bars

From a brownstone-lined street, descend the stairs into Bell, Book, and Candle (6-minute walk), a candlelit bar serving wine, beer, and cocktails. At the Happiest Hour (5-minute walk), cocktails are the focus (obviously), and we love the 1950s Florida inspired décor.
