To some, The Jane is impossibly chic; to others, the rooms are reminiscent of Sing Sing. You know, the prison. This historic building housed survivors of the Titanic in 1912, and many feel the standard rooms resemble ships’ cabins or railway cars--which is either going to seem really neat to you, or mildly frightening. Despite the tight space, The Jane offers serious value for the neighborhood, and hosts a lively nightlife scene.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Some rooms experience noise from the bar and ballroom downstairs. The music doesn’t stop until the wee hours, so either come here to party or bring some earplugs.

Standard rooms are a tiny 50 square feet, with single beds and a shared unisex bathroom down the hall. Those seeking privacy should reserve the Captain’s Cabins, which are five times larger and have private bathrooms.

The Captain’s Cabins also have Hudson River views-- reserve one with a private terrace during the warmer months.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located at the edge of the West Village, this hotel is set in a quiet neighborhood full of restaurants, bars, and shops. Exploring on foot is part of the appeal here, but if you don't feel like walking, the subway is also nearby at 8^th Avenue and 14^th Street, where the A, C, E, and L trains connect to Uptown, Downtown, and Brooklyn.

Restaurants

The West Village is known for its intimate restaurants on quiet streets. One prime example is Barbuto (2-minute walk), located on Washington Street. This Italian restaurant has garage-style doors that open in warm weather, and also, the roasted chicken is legendary. To taste one of New York’s famous burgers in a storied tavern, take a stroll down Jane Street to Corner Bistro (6-minute walk). Expect lines for a table; sip an affordable beer while you wait. There is no shortage of options for charming Italian restaurants in this neighborhood--Frankie’s 570 Spuntino (7-minute walk) is a locals’ favorite.

Bars

Red brick walls and leather banquettes set a cozy scene at Anfora (6-minute walk), a romantic wine bar with good house cocktails. Employees Only (11-minute walk) is one of the West Village’s most acclaimed watering holes known for their original cocktails.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Location and a nightlife scene loved by locals is what sets this hotel apart from the competition. The many pleasures of the West Village are a short stroll away, while the on-site bar and ballroom continues to draw a mix of locals and out-of-towners alike. Anybody looking to dance the night away is going to love this place. Plus, the in-season rooftop views of the Hudson River are impeccable.
