Fodor's Expert Review The Inn at Irving Place
56 Irving Pl., between 17th and 18th Sts., New York, New York, 10003, USA See on Map Fodor's Choice
Fantasies of Old New York—Manhattan straight from the pages of Edith Wharton and Henry James, an era of genteel brick townhouses and Tiffany lamps—spring to life at this discreet, romantic inn. The inn is spread across two townhouses built in 1834 and is decorated with lovely antiques. They also have a lavish afternoon tea, which totally completes the "old world" feel.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Make reservations in advance for this small property—rooms book up quickly.
room
Elegant rooms have ornamental fireplaces, four-poster beds with embroidered linens, wood shutters, and glossy cherry wood floors (although they are getting a bit timeworn).
The room named after Madame Olenska—a lovelorn Wharton character—has a bay window with a sitting nook and is a romantic space worthy of a special anniversary.
bathroom
Clean bathrooms have pedestal sinks, shower/tub combos, Frette bath linens and Penhaligon’s bath products.
lobby
The small reception area has original architectural details, furniture that nods to the building’s past and charming antiques.
dining
One of the city’s most famous tea salons, Lady Mendl’s, is on the lobby level. It is an old world tea salon where a five-course afternoon tea is served. The inn also hosts Cibar, a cozy cocktail lounge with a fireplace and plush red couches.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Located on Irving Place between East 17th and East 18th Street, this inn is set on one of New York’s most historically charming streets. Several neighborhoods are easily reached on foot, including Gramercy, Union Square and the East Village. Subway service is nearby with the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W trains at Union Square. Taxis and Uber are widely available in the neighborhood.
Restaurants
Chef Mario Batali’s ode to Spain, Casa Mono (1-minute walk), is a delightfully tiny restaurant worthy of a special date night. Neighborhood staple Gramercy Tavern (5-minute walk) has a formal dining room and a more casual bar area; pick a space depending on your mood. From the team behind Union Square Café, Daily Provisions (3-minute walk) is a casual bakery for coffee, sandwiches, and baked goods.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Book a stay at this inn and you’re granted access beyond the threshold of New York’s exclusive townhouses from the 1800s. We love the charming tea salon, the historic details and antiques throughout, and the intimate experience of such a small property. This inn offers a genuine glimpse into New York’s past.
