Why We Like It

We don’t—but you could do a lot worse in this city.

Fodor's Expert Review

The Marcel at Gramercy doesn’t offer much other than a European-take on city chic. The rooms are snug, the amenities are nill, there isn’t even a drop to drink in here or free Wi-Fi; but a good location and a bold decor is enough to draw crowds to this Gramercy hotel all the same.

Room

The rooms range from glorified closet to big bedroom—the square footage caps at 280 sq. feet. Tufted chartreuse headboards, glass-and-chrome desks and other Hollywood Regency-inspired furnishings dot the room with character.

Bathroom

Marble-lined stand showers with tiny tubs take up the bulk of this water closet. The sink spans the whole vanity with little other storage space available. The fixtures and materials look rather luxe.

Lobby

The lobby is simply the reception with a small area for awaiting transportation.

Gym

No gym on premises, passes to New York Sports Club are available.

Dining

No restaurant is on premises, but guests receive a percentage off at Natsumi, a sushi tapas joint, which rents the ground floor restaurant space. There's a 10th floor lounge that provides free-wifi and breakfast, but nothing more than a sad croissant and such. Room service is provided, but unclear from where.

Drinking

None on premises, but Natsumi provides all food and beverage.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Closest subway is the 6 line at 23rd street.

Restaurants

The Marcel at Gramercy sits north of 23rd street in what is usually the start Murray Hill, famous for its bros and beer joints, but there are some true gems in the area. The greatest secret of the neighborhood is Molly’s (3-minute walk), a sawdust-floor Irish bar that’s more a mama’s home kitchen than a drink-in-the-dark joint. For an upscale Roman trattoria, try Danny Meyer’s Maialino (6-minutes), in the Gramercy Park Hotel, that’s carciofi and porchetta are perhaps sent from the Gods themselves. Walk west towards Park Avenue (7-minutes) to find a slew of fine restaurants such as Upland.

Bars

This stretch of Murray Hill isn’t home to anything particularly exciting except Taproom 37 (3-minutes) that offers an extensive range of craft brews. The Globe (2-minutes) is a fine for a pre-dinner pint, but for something more standout, head towards Irving Place and Union Square (15-minutes).
